Vol. 577 No. 5

Written Answers. - Arts Plan.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

124 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism if he has satisfied himself that adequate support exists to encourage the arts here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [31879/03]

I am satisfied that this Government has more than adequately demonstrated its support of the arts.

Support for the Arts Council in 2004 will amount to €52.5 million, an increase of some 19% on the 2003 figure. In the context of public finances that are still under considerable pressure in many areas, this is a most tangible demonstration of the Government's commitment to the arts, and of the priority afforded by this Government to the arts in Ireland, and one that I am very happy to stand over.

By way of direct support, my Department's ACCESS scheme of capital grants for arts and culture infrastructure will provide €45.71 million to 44 projects during the life of the scheme, which will greatly increase access for people and communities all around the country to arts facilities and activities.
