JOINT COMMITTEE ON COMMUNICATIONS, ENERGY AND NATURAL RESOURCES debate -
Wednesday, 12 May 2010

Business of Joint Committee.

Before we conclude our meeting, Deputy D'Arcy wishes to raise an issue.

I seek the consent of the committee to compile a report on anaerobic digestion. We have the prospect of producing approximately 12% or 13% of the nation's requirement for energy through anaerobic digestion, the extraction of methane and the burning of that methane in a combined heat plant. With the consent of the committee, I would like to take a particular direction to demonstrate that this is an energy security issue. Currently, practically all of our gas comes from the Middle East. We are at the end of that pipeline or gas tanker line from the Middle East. A number of small anaerobic digester plants throughout the country could produce gas. I seek the support of the committee to compile a report on this.

Is that agreed? Agreed. I ask Deputy D'Arcy to submit his proposal in writing, with a costing, to the clerk to the committee.

The joint committee adjourned at 11.05 a.m. until 9.45 a.m. on Wednesday, 26 May 2010.
