JOINT COMMITTEE ON ENVIRONMENT AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT debate -
Wednesday, 19 Feb 2003

Vol. 1 No. 4

Business of Joint Committee.

The Sub-Committee on EU Scrutiny has submitted three documents to the committee for consideration. We will consider them in detail in the near future. The secretariat will forward details to members in the next week. Are there any other matters members wish to raise?

When will legislation be introduced?

We are informed by the Department that it will be introduced on Wednesday, 19 March.

The local government Bill?

It will be a new Bill dealing with the issue of dual mandate. It will be published on Friday.

Will we meet on 19 March?

It is a non-sitting week. As some members are due to travel to conferences the week before that and others are travelling the week after, we will meet that week.

Are we meeting during the non-sitting week?

On 19 March?

Yes. On a separate matter, it is my intention to write to all members of this committee - it is not aimed at members present - to ask them to play their part in meetings. This committee will not be successful unless all members make an effort to attend meetings. It is embarrassing when delegations, whom we have invited in, turn up to make their presentations and only a handful of members attend the meeting.

Would it not be better to write to those who do not attend the meetings?

Some members are here less often than others. I will write to everyone.

The joint committee adjourned at 3.57 p.m.
