JOINT COMMITTEE ON EUROPEAN AFFAIRS debate -
Thursday, 23 Sep 2004

Business of Joint Committee.

We have other business to which to attend. We have received a letter from the Russian Ambassador in which he thanks the committee for a message of condolence to the victims of the callous terrorist attacks in Beslan. He states that our sympathy, solidarity and support in this moment of grief mean a great deal to the Russian people and are deeply appreciated. He will convey our thoughts and prayers to the people of Beslan and Russia. The letter is noted.

We have received e-mail correspondence from Robin Hannon of the European Anti-Poverty Network. I propose that the secretariat make arrangements to meet the organisation's representatives as suggested. Is that agreed? Agreed.

We have received correspondence from Kosovo-Ireland Solidarity inquiring as to whether two leading human rights activists might address the joint committee to raise awareness of the ongoing problems in the area of Belgrade. I understand the Sub-committee on Human Rights may meet the group and the joint committee received a similar invitation. I propose to note this item and leave the matter to the sub-committee. Is that agreed? Agreed

The minutes of the meeting of 9 September have been circulated. Are they agreed? Agreed.

I thank John Hamilton for standing in for Siobhan Malone who is due to get married on Saturday. The joint committee sends Siobhan our very best wishes. She has been an excellent clerk of the sub-committee and, more recently, the joint committee.

Prionsias De Rossa, MEP

She should be back at her desk on Monday.

What is the position regarding the proposed visit to Iceland which featured on a previous agenda?

I have no knowledge of the matter but I will ask the secretariat to communicate the position to the Senator later today.

I apologise for not producing a report, which was due before the joint committee by the end of June. In light of recent elections and the need to settle in and so forth, I hope members will accept my apology. I am preparing the report and have arranged meetings with the directorate general for competition as it is directly involved in the issue. I hope to complete the report by mid to late November.

At the next meeting of the joint committee there will be a discussion with the Minister for Foreign Affairs on the next General Affairs and Externel Relations Council. The meeting will take place on Thursday, 7 October at a time to be agreed with the Minister.

The joint committee adjourned at 12.40 p.m. sine die
