Vol. 7 No. 11

PROPOSED JOINT CONFERENCE.

CATHAOIRLEACH

Senator Douglas has called my attention to the fact that with regard to the message from the Dáil in reference to the Shop Hours Bill that the Dáil had disagreed with certain of our amendments, that time may be of importance, and he has asked me to give him permission to move a resolution with regard to it. I think it is probable that the resolution will be agreed to, and I have asked him to move it.

My proposal is that, as provided in the Standing Orders, we should ask for a joint conference of an equal number of members of each House before we decide whether we will insist on our amendments or not, and the resolution that I wish to propose is:

"That it is desirable that a conference be held between members representing the Seanad and the Dáil upon the amendments made by the Seanad to the Shop Hours (Drapery Trades) (Dublin and Districts) Bill, 1926, with which the Dáil has disagreed. That the Seanad doth propose a conference to be held accordingly and that it be represented thereat by the following five Senators——"

The names I intended proposing were Senators Moran and MacGuinness, who are opposed to the amendments, and Senators Farren, Brown and myself.

I suggest that it is hardly fair to put Senator Moran on in his absence.

CATHAOIRLEACH

We will not discuss it now. I only wanted the House to know that this proposal would be made, and later on a communication might be sent to Senator Moran.

In regard to that, I am not in any way interfering with the decision to take the message next week. It is purely to see whether we might have some further information when we come to decide.
