PUBLIC BUSINESS. - ELECTION OF A SENATOR.

The House proceeded to elect a Senator to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator the Earl of Mayo.

CATHAOIRLEACH

In accordance with our Standing Orders I have to mention that the following four candidates have been duly nominated for the casual vacancy in the Seanad caused by the death of Senator the Earl of Mayo:

Robert Andrew Anderson, 1 Earlsfort Mansions, Dublin.

Qualifications: By his association with Sir Horace Plunkett in the Irish Agricultural Organisation Society he has done honour to the nation by his useful public service. By his special qualifications and attainments he represents one of the most important aspects of the nation's life.—Proposed by Senator Sir T. Esmonde and Sir J. Griffith.

Thomas Johnson, 63 Edenvale Road, Ranelagh, Dublin.

Qualifications:—Secretary of the Irish Labour Party and Trade Union Congress: has considerable practical Parliamentary experience, being a member of Dáil Eireann and Leader of the Opposition, 1922-1927: was Chairman of the Committee on Public Accounts, 1923-27: member of many other Dáil Committees: was member of Commission of Inquiry into Industrial Resources of Ireland: member of Railway Commission and Agricultural Commission: member of Mansion House Conference on Conscription and member of Executive of Irish White Cross. —Proposed by Senator O'Farrell.

The McGillycuddy, D.S.O., Colonel, The Reeks, Beaufort, Co. Kerry.

Qualifications:—Chairman Agricultural Committee, Kerry County Council: member of Consultative Council under Live Stock Breeding Act, 1925: past President of the Kerry Cattle Society: Area Counsellor British Legion, Kerry area: actively interested in Local Government reforms: lives continuously in Ireland and concerns himself with all movements, local and otherwise, for social betterment: farms a considerable area on most modern lines and breeds pedigree cattle.—Proposed by the Marquess of Lansdowne.

Sir Walter Nugent, Bart., Donore, Multyfarnham, Co. Westmeath.

Qualifications:—Chairman, Great Southern Railways: Director, Bank of Ireland: sat in Imperial Parliament as Member for Westmeath.—Nominated by Senator the Earl of Granard.

The first ballot resulted as follows:— The McGillycuddy, 27 votes; Sir Walter Nugent, 26 votes; Mr. Johnson, 19 votes and Mr. Anderson, 8 votes.

Mr. Anderson and Mr. Johnson were then eliminated, and on a further ballot the voting was:—Sir Walter Nugent, 27 votes: The McGillycuddy, 24 votes.

CATHAOIRLEACH

I have accordingly to declare that Sir Walter Nugent has been duly elected to fill the vacancy.
