Vol. 10 No. 19

PUBLIC BUSINESS. - BUSINESS OF THE SEANAD.

CATHAOIRLEACH

Perhaps it would be more convenient if I asked the views of the House now in regard to next week. I do not see that there will be any business to dispose of that will necessitate the House sitting to-morrow. With regard to next week, as I understand it, the Afforestation Bill will have reached us, and it is probable that the Bills dealing with the amendment of the Constitution will also have reached this House next week. Whether that is likely to be realised or not I cannot say. What I have in mind is that in view of the pressure otherwise that will ultimately fall on us in the course of the next three weeks, the House might consider whether it would be desirable to sit on Tuesday and to take the Committee Stages on Thursday. It would not be quite reasonable, I think, in the case of the Constitution Bills to take the Committee Stages on the day following. If the Constitution Bills reach the Seanad, and if the Second Reading is disposed of on Tuesday, it might be possible to adjourn until Thursday and then take the Committee Stages. I only throw that out as a suggestion to the House for consideration. Meanwhile we will pass to the other business, and Senators may turn it over in their minds. I was anxious to have the matter agreed to by this House, because it is unlikely that I will be here next week.

Will that mean that there will be no sitting on Wednesday?

CATHAOIRLEACH

It would be more convenient to have an interval of two days. Of course if the House is prepared to take the Second Reading on Wednesday it could take the Committee Stage on Thursday. That is what I have in mind.

You could finally decide it now, as your suggestion will be accepted by the House.

CATHAOIRLEACH

Does the House understand what the suggestion is? Assuming these Bills are ready and reach us so as to enable this House to take the Second Reading by Tuesday, the House would meet on that day, and, having met that day, would take the Committee Stage on the following Thursday. I take it that is agreed to.
