Vol. 34 No. 24

Business of Seanad.

I have now an announcement to make regarding the business on the Order Paper for today. Senators will be aware that we summoned the House to meet to-day for the purpose of considering the Central Fund Bill which we expected to have received from the Dáil last night. The Bill has not yet arrived and our latest information is that we cannot expect it before about 6 p.m. this evening.

At a meeting I had with certain Senators this morning it was arranged that we should take the Defence Forces Bill first and when that business had concluded, adjourn the House until 7 p.m. On the resumption at 7 p.m. we would take up the Central Fund Bill if it had arrived, but if it had not, we would take the motion, No. 3 in the name of Senator Counihan. When that business had concluded the House would proceed with the Central Fund Bill and the view was that that would not be concluded by 10 p.m., the normal hour of adjournment. Accordingly, it was agreed to ask the House to meet to-morrow at 11.30 a.m. so that consideration of the Bill might be concluded. I presume the arrangement come to at the meeting this morning meets with the approval of the House.

Agreed.

Just one further item, Motion No. 4 in the name of Senator Joseph Johnston is being postponed in accordance with the wishes of the Minister.
