Vol. 63 No. 4

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take Nos. 1, 2 and 3, as on the Order Paper.

I wonder if the Leader of the House is in a position to indicate when the House will be meeting next, and when it is proposed to take some of the motions on the Order Paper?

It was hoped to take No. 6 today but the Minister is engaged at the meeting of the NAC. With regard to No. 7, I also had arrangements in train to take it but it will not be possible to take that for a couple of weeks more. As to when the House will meet, I am not in a position to say at the moment but I shall let the Senator know later.

I should like to feel that there is a greater sense of urgency on the Leader of the House to clear the Order Paper. Five motions appear on the Order Paper. Some of them have been there for six months or more. Two deal with the universities, two with agriculture and one with South Africa. On the previous occasion the House rose at about 6 o'clock. The day before it rose about 8 o'clock. Extensive mechanism is involved in assembling this House and when we are gathered together I feel that even though we do not finish a motion, we might at least get it in train and I should like to feel that the Leader of the House is actively concerned to clear the Order Paper. I, for one, do not like the feeling that the Order Paper is being choked up and yet time going unused.

Later on this term we will find ourselves obliged to rush through a number of Bills without adequate consideration because Bills which will probably be introduced in this House are not being introduced and, as far as one can see from the Order Paper of the other House, there are quite a number of Bills there and we will be expected to clear all these by the end of July.

The Order of Business, as proposed by the Leader of the House, is agreed.

Could we hear from the Leader of the House whether he has got this sense of urgency?

I can assure the Senator that I have a terrific sense of urgency because I do not like the look of the Order Paper week after week but the Senator cannot expect miracles.
