Vol. 96 No. 1

Funds of Suitors Bill, 1981: Committee and Final Stages.

Section 1 agreed to.
SECTION 2.
Question proposed: "That section 2 stand part of the Bill".

On the point raised by Senator Robinson which was ruled out of order, on the order of the Chief Justice, the Bank of Ireland set up a fund to pay out of the account of the Exchequer a sum not exceeding a given figure. Can the Houses give a direction to the Chief Justice to pay out whatever money is required, or must the Chief Justice satisfy himself? What say has he in the matter?

I assume that at the request of the Houses the Chief Justice, on the assumption that the money is available to be paid out, will then order the money to be paid out.

When is there likely to be more money available from the fund of suitors fund? What is the present estimate of when there may be further drawings on it?

We will look at the availabilty of money and I assure Senator Robinson that if the money is available it will certainly be forthcoming.
