Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 29 Feb 1984

Vol. 103 No. 3

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take today Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4. My proposal to the House is that we should adjourn from 5.30 to 6.30 and, when we resume at 6.30 p.m. to take No. 4 from 6.30 until 8 o'clock, leaving time for the Adjournment debate between 8 and 8.30. It is not proposed to sit tomorrow.

On the Order of Business, does that mean that we will be taking the second part of that motion next week?

Will we be taking the motion on the EEC definitely next week?

We will be completing the EEC motion?

I would like to confirm that as the business is planned at the moment it is proposed to take item No. 6 — the motion on the EEC — next week. Senators will note that the motion has been redrafted in order to cover the whole of 1983. I have done this because there has been a continued delay in regard to the 22nd Report. That report is now with the printers. It is hoped that it will come back fairly quickly from the printers and be very quickly approved by the Government. But in case the report does not become available I have put the motion in this form which, any way, would be what the Seanad would debate if we were debating the original motion.

In regard to the second point about whether the motion would be concluded next week, this motion is not a Private Member's motion; it is a Government motion and therefore there is no limitation on the length of speeches or on the length of debate. My own feeling would be that it would be the wish of the House that this should be a substantial debate and, accordingly, I would not anticipate that it would be finished on the next sitting day. Certainly I do not want to do anything to limit Senators in regard to the discussion of this important matter.

Order of Business agreed to.
