Seanad Éireann debate -
Tuesday, 18 Dec 1984

Vol. 106 No. 9

Business of Seanad.

In moving that the Seanad should adjourn until 10.30 a.m. tomorrow I would just like to advert to the question of the business to be taken tomorrow. I indicated on the Order of Business today that it was proposed that tomorrow we would take in addition to the Social Welfare Bill, the EC Bill and the Appropriation Bill, that we would commence the discussion on the EC report on disadvantaged areas. It is clear to Members that this debate has flourished and will last — in all probability — for several hours tomorrow. That means that we would be very late starting the discussion on the disadvantaged areas. As the Minister of State concerned, Deputy Paul Connaughton, has a number of engagements in the west of Ireland tomorrow. I think we would be better to decide not to take that item and let him go to the west to do something for the disadvantaged areas. We can discuss the question in the new year.

We have no objection to the change in the Order of Business but I am doubtful if the Minister of State will enhance the position with regard to the disadvantaged areas on his tour tomorrow. It is in another area completely that we are concerned about advancing that case.

The Seanad adjourned at 9 p.m. until 10.30 a.m. on Wednesday, 19 December 1984.
