Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 19 Dec 1984

Vol. 106 No. 10

Business of Seanad.

It is proposed to adjourn the House until 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday, 23 January 1985. In doing so, I would like to point out that during this year the House sat on 53 days. This is the second highest number of days on which the Seanad has sat since the foundation of the State. This is an achievement in which all of us can take pride and I want to thank all those who have contributed to the smooth working of those 53 days — the Cathaoirleach, the Leas-Chathaoirleach and the panel of Chairmen.

I want to pay credit also to the Clerk, the Clerk Assistant, the Seanad staff and the Joint Staff of the Houses of the Oireachtas, to the Leader and the Whip of the Opposition who have given co-operation at all times that it was politically appropriate for them to do so and who have made my job as Leader of the House far easier than it would otherwise have been. I wish also to pay credit to all Senators, some of whom wished to speak when it was not possible and at other times were rather reluctant when we would have liked them to speak. I hope we can strike a better balance in that regard during 1985.

I should like to add to what has been said by the Leader of the House in wishing the Cathaoirleach and the Leas-Chathaoirleach a very happy Christmas. Thank you for your forebearance during the year. There were times when I thought the Leas-Chathaoirleach was giving less than fair play to this side of the House and there were times when I thought the Cathaoirleach was very lenient with some of us on this side. I would like to thank the staff of the House — reporters, secretarial staff and everybody else, all of whom have been working extremely hard. We might sometimes criticise the Press Gallery for what they do not say and sometimes we may criticise them for what they say, but at least in this House we have a very dedicated group of Press people who do not just come in when it is politically expedient for them to do so. They do not merely run in when somebody is going to say something controversial. We have a very dedicated group of reporters in this House and I would like to thank them for the work they do on behalf of the House and in trying to keep up the traditions of this House and giving the people of Ireland the knowledge that there are two Houses in the Oireachtas, and that this is an important one. To the Leader of the House, the deputy Leader and to everybody else who is in any way associated with the House, including the people who get our names right on the monitors, I wish a very happy Christmas. I am sorry that this year we did not reach the peak. We were only second in a long line of years in terms of sittings. Maybe next year we may sit 54 days but not, perhaps, in Christmas week.

It would be inappropriate for me as leader of the Labour group if I did not join with my colleagues in wishing a very happy Christmas to the Cathaoirleach, the Leas-Chathaoirleach, the Leader of the Opposition, the Whip, the Independent Senators, my colleagues on this side of the House in the Fine Gael group and all the staff — Mr. Tobin, Mr. Coughlan, the Official Reporters, the ushers, the Press, who have been most courteous to us, and to the Minister who has been instrumental in making our year a happier one. He took some courageous steps which we appreciate and took most of the flak from the public generally. He rewarded politicians for the efforts they made. It was appropriate for the Minister for the Public Service to do that. We appreciate it and I would like to wish him and everybody in his Department a happy Christmas. Please God we will all be together this time 12 months.

Maybe on different sides.

If so, we will accept the cut and thrust of the political debate. It was a pleasure to work with everybody in this House this year and I would like to be associated with the remarks of the Leader of the House to whom we owe a special word of thanks because he is an extremely busy man and has dedicated himself to the working of this House.

The Seanad adjourned at 4.10 p.m. until 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday, 23 January 1985.
