Seanad Éireann debate -

Vol. 110 No. 8

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator John Ellis, that on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The reduction in service being provided by An Post at Derradda PO, Co. Leitrim.

I regret that I have to rule that this matter is not suitable for discussion on the Adjournment on the ground of lack of ministerial responsibility.

With regard to your ruling on this matter, we were given an assurance by the Minister when the measure setting up An Post was put through the House that there would be no reduction by An Post in services anywhere throughout the country. Now we find that An Post are refusing to service this very rural area leaving people without a postal service except on one day per week.

You are completely out of order, Senator.

I feel we should ask An Post why they are not living up to the commitments which they gave in their setting up.

There is nothing to stop you.

As the Minister gave the commitments on the setting up of the organisation, I feel that the Minister should still be responsible.

I do not know what Minister is responsible but I am not responsible for any Minister.
