Vol. 111 No. 14

Order of Business.

I think it would be remiss of me, as Deputy Leader of the House, even if I am going to be ruled out of order, if I did not agree with everything that Senator de Brún has said. This House should condemn the action. I am sorry if I am being out of order but it is Córas Iompair Éireann——

An Leas-Chathaoirleach

Senator Ferris, as Deputy Leader of the House you might put down a motion and we can discuss it.

I think we should express an opinion about it and I am expressing it as Deputy Leader of the House. The Order of Business today is Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. I suggest we suspend the sitting for lunch from 12.30 p.m. to 2 p.m. and if no new motion is started after 4.30 p.m. we should conclude at that time. In other words, we will not take new business after 4.30 p.m.

With regard to Item No. 36 on the Order of Business, this is a motion in my name and in the names of Senator Cassidy and Senator Michael Lynch. While I cannot say it is a critically urgent matter, it is in relation to the Gaming and Lotteries Acts and I understand that RTE have a problem at the moment, that An Post are losing out and that many many thousands of people are suffering as regards enjoyment. In the ordinary way it would be a long time before this motion comes before the House. I believe a simple amendment would be a rather innocuous operation for this House and I would like to ask the Leader of the House if he would consider introducing such an amendment. I believe he can do this since the legislation has been inaugrated in this House. Seeing that this is a matter about which there will be no objection, I would ask the acting leader if he would consider bringing forward an amendment at a very early date to get over this anomaly.

I take it No. 36 is a Fianna Fáil Private Members motion and could be taken by arrangement with the Whips on the next sitting day if the Fianna Fáil Members so wish. Next week is the Private Members' Time of the Labour Party and we are taking No. 30, which is not an unrelated matter. Indeed, it might be possible in the discussion on the Labour Party motion on credit to raise the matter referred to by Senator Fitzsimons. However, in view of his last remarks, I will communicate his views to the Minister for Justice to see if it would be appropriate to legislate in the way that Senator Fitzsimons suggested and if, in fact, the Minister would bring forward legislation in that area. If that does not happen I take it that it would be the next resolution that would be taken in Private Members' Time. Number 30 is next week and that is the Labour Party. I think that is the only question on the Order of Business.

Order of Business agreed to.
