Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 5 Nov 1986

Vol. 114 No. 12

Business of Seanad.

It is proposed to sit at 10.30 a.m. tomorrow. On that occasion we will take up the Trustee (Authorised Investments) Order, 1986, and the Consumer Information (Consumer Credit) Order, 1986. After that we will resume Second Stage of the National Monuments (Amendment) Bill, 1986, and I will for the third time express the hope that that will be carried to conclusion but with confidence this time. The House should also finish off the resumed debate on the Fifth Report of the Joint Committee on Small Businesses — the Insurance problems of Small Businesses. It is probable that that would leave only a little time before our normal time for rising and I think it would be neater if, in fact, we did not order the debate on the milk cessation scheme but to allow that debate, as a whole, on tomorrow week rather than start it, stop it and start it again.

I would go along with what the Leader of the House has said. I hope that the National Monuments (Amendment) Bill, 1986, will not finish tomorrow because it is a Bill of major national importance and I hope everybody will have a chance to speak on it and to deal with their own local issues. It is an extremely important Bill and I sincerely hope that the Irish Press Group might honour us with their presence tomorrow. I can guarantee you that from now until the day they do come in I am going to suggest on every occasion that democracy is better served by having representatives of the newspapers here rather than they criticising the Seanad and criticising Senators. The Irish Press Group should be represented here to report what goes on in this House.

I do not mind what the Senator says so long as he is in order.

I should like to inquire if it is proposed to take the Control of Clinical Trials Bill next week and if so when will the Government amendments, if any, be circulated?

I have been informed that some Government amendments have been prepared. I am not sure of the extent of their circulation or the time of their circulation but I think they have been received. The question of which of our Bills at Committee Stage will be taken next Wednesday is a matter that I will determine tomorrow morning and I will communicate with the Seanad as a whole before the House rises tomorrow.

The Seanad adjourned at 8.15 p.m. until 10.30 a.m. on Thursday, 6 November 1986.
