Vol. 119 No. 7

Maritime Jurisdiction (Amendment) Bill, 1987: Committee and Final Stages.

Question proposed: "That section 1 stand part of the Bill."

I want to make a very brief point on section 1 which perhaps I should properly have made on Second Stage. The extension of the outer limit of our territorial seas occurs at a time when our lighthouse service is being automated and I think it is an appropriate occasion to pay tribute to those people who over the years, often in great discomfort, provided guidance for sailors. I hope the new automated Irish Lights will be as effective as the old service in saving lives.

I should like to add my thanks to the members of the lighthouse service for the tremendous and trojan service they have given over the years. I hope that the technology of the future will be as good as the old system.

Question put and agreed to.
Section 2 agreed to.
SECTION 3.
Question proposed: "That section 3 stand part of the Bill."

On a point of information, why can the Bill not come into effect until 1 September and not as soon as it has passed all stages?

I do not know. The date agreed to by the Dáil was 1 September.

Question put and agreed to.
Title agreed to.

Question proposed, "That the Bill do now pass."

I should like to thank the Senators for the efficient way they accepted this legislation and for the manner in which they discussed the various points with me.

I propose that the House adjourn for lunch until 1.30 p.m.

Is that agreed? Agreed.

Sitting suspended at 12.30 p.m. and resumed at 1.30 p.m.
