Vol. 120 No. 4

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take Items Nos. 1, 2 and 3 and amendment No. 1 will also be taken with Item No. 3. The Minister has to leave at 12.30 p.m. so probably we will not take any more of the Bill today. I will talk to the Whips about whether we will adjourn at 12.30 p.m. or start the Courts Bill. I do not know if the Minister is available.

Item No. 3 is a motion in the name of the Labour Party which would normally be taken from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. I have been discussing this with other Members of the House today and because it coincides with one of the most important national events in the sporting world, when Ireland will be playing the Soviet Union and in order to facilitate all the Members to be able to participate in what will be a victory I would like, if the House agrees, to change Private Members' Time from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. to 6 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. or 6.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. and thus allow people to see the match and resume afterwards. Possibly from 6 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. would be more suitable to allow the Adjournment debate to take place then. I put that as a change not to the Order of Business but to the time we take the motion.

I must say with all respects to Senator Ferris' diversionary interests, what he suggests is trivialising this House. Our Order of Business takes preference before a ball game and I am sure my colleagues will agree with me on that. I think this is a ridiculous motion.

I take it from what the Acting Leader of the House said that we will be attempting to take all or Part VI of the Companies Bill today and if we reach the end of Part VI we would then finish consideration of that Bill today. If that is the case, I totally support that. I have been asking all along that we would take a certain section or part of it per-week. I would welcome that. The proposal is that we would work on the Companies Bill until 12.30 p.m. and finish then or earlier if we have finished all of Part VI. I want clarification as to what we are doing.

In reply to Senator O'Toole, that would be more or less what we intend to do. I understand from the Minister that there is more than that part of the Bill ready now and it is most likely that we will take more of it tomorrow morning for two hours.

As far as the suggestion made by Senator Ferris is concerned, I have no objection to it. I agree with Senator Murphy that it is not a thing that we want to do. The trouble is that, if we do this for one function, others will look for it afterwards. Senator Murphy himself might, if Cork were playing Tipperary in the All-Ireland. If we are to do it, from 6 o'clock to 7.30 p.m. would be the best arrangement.

Is that agreed?

Senators
