Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 8 Mar 1989

Vol. 122 No. 5

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Gerry Reynolds that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Foreign Affairs, in view of the joint statement following a meeting of the Anglo-Irish Conference to state what steps are being taken to proceed with the restoration of the Ballyconnell-Ballinamore canal.

I also received notice from Senator John Connor of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Tourism and Transport to confirm that no obstacles will be placed in the way of the proposed flights originating in New York, via Reykjavik, and landing at Connaught Regional Airport, Charlestown, County Mayo.

I also received notice from Senator Philip Hogan of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Finance to intervene immediately with the Revenue Commissioners so that the ban on the postal stamping services can be lifted forthwith.

I also received notice from Senator Katharine Bulbulia of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education to recognise the grave situation facing the Waterford Teachers' Centre which may have to close if sanction cannot be given for a full-time director with adequate remuneration.

I also received notice from Senator Tony McKenna of the following matter:

The need for CIE Iarnród Éireann to provide a proper rail service for the people of the greater part of North Tipperary and surrounding area.

I regard the matters raised by Senators Reynolds, Connor, Hogan and Bulbulia as suitable for discussion. I have selected the matter raised by Senator Reynolds and it will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senators Connor, Hogan and Bulbulia may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.

I regret I have to rule that the matter raised by Senator McKenna is not suitable for discussion on the ground of lack of ministerial responsibility.

Before I call the Leader of the House I want to make a brief statement on the division bells. Last Wednesday, Senator Cregan, the Fine Gael Whip, reported to me that he had missed a vote because the bells were not working on the fifth floor of the five storey office block. I want to assure Senator Cregan, and indeed all colleagues, that the bells are now in working order. I also want to thank Senator Cregan for bringing this matter to my attention so promptly and I regret he missed that vote in the circumstances through no fault of his own.
