Seanad Éireann debate -
Tuesday, 19 Dec 1989

Vol. 123 No. 14

Request Under Standing Order 29.

I have notice from Senator John A. Murphy regarding a motion which he wishes to move under Standing Order 29. I now call on Senator Murphy to give notice of the motion before I give my ruling.

I request Adjournment of the Seanad under Standing Order 29 on a specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent consideration, namely, the emergency now obtaining in numerous places along the south coast caused by last weekend's disastrous floods, the need for Seanad Éireann to debate the matter urgently, especially as Dáil Éireann is not sitting, and the need for the Minister for the Environment to indicate how the Government propose to respond to the emergency.

I have given careful consideration to the matter raised by Senator Murphy and I do not consider it to be a matter contemplated by Standing Order 29. I regret, therefore, that I have to rule it out of order.
