Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 4 Apr 1990

Vol. 124 No. 14

Request under Standing Order 29.

I have had notice from Senator Jackman regarding a motion which she wishes to move under Standing Order 29. I now call on Senator Jackman to give notice of the motion before I give my ruling.

The notice of motion was that Seanad Éireann calls on the Minister for Finance to locate an office of the Ordnance Survey in the mid-west, centred in Limerick in line with the Government's policy of decentralisation. Why I consider it urgent is because when this was first raised there was a notion of withdrawing a substantial section of the field office staff to Dublin. Since then the Minister has conceded to decentralisation——

On a point of order, Senator Jackman, all you need do is move the motion under Standing Order 29. You do not have to——

Acting Chairman

I was about to say that, Senator Jackman.

It was to emphasise the urgency. Because of the recess I was afraid that when we came back decentralisation would have taken place and Limerick would not have been the chosen centre.

Acting Chairman

I have given careful consideration to the matter raised by Senator Jackman and I cannot consider it to be a matter contemplated by Standing Order 29.

That is a great pity because the withdrawal of the field service means that in County Offaly where the 6 inch maps were designed in 1906 it is now a quagmire for anybody trying to do anything down there. It is completely out of date.

Acting Chairman

The matter cannot be debated at this time.
