Seanad Éireann debate -

Vol. 126 No. 3

Business of Seanad.

As the proceedings on the Pensions Bill went beyond 10.15 p.m. the motion on farm incomes will now be taken tomorrow at 6.30 p.m. This means that the sos from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow will now have to be changed. I move, accordingly, that the sitting be suspended tomorrow from 6 p.m. until 6.30 p.m. I should point out that the allocation of time resolution makes provision for a change in the time set for the sos. It may be altered by the House and that is precisely what I am doing now.

Is the proposal agreed?

The correct time to put such a proposal is on the Order of Business tomorrow.

Acting Chairman

There will be no Order of Business in the morning; the order has been decided.

The appropriate time to put such a proposal is at the commencement of the Seanad tomorrow.

Acting Chairman

The difference is only half an hour.

Does the Leader of the House intend making a statement at the beginning of business tomorrow?

Acting Chairman

He does not have to.

The allocation of time motion, item No. 2, makes clear pro vision for a change which is exactly what I am doing here. It is quite specific.

I know provision ha been made but how are the other Members going to be informed of the proposed change?

Acting Chairman

Through the Whips

I am disappointed that change has been made today, given the there was a very acrimonious debate——

Acting Chairman

The difference only half an hour.

I do not think it is a matter for you to justify the position adopted by any side of the House.

Acting Chairman

I am not justifying anything; I am just making a point. Is the proposal agreed? Agreed.

Before we conclude, I would like to be associated with the sentiments expressed. The Minister has once again proved himself to be a very caring Minister and gave comprehensive replies. It is, indeed, to his credit that we did not have one vote. The sentiments expressed on both sides must be a source of encouragement for him. I would like, again, to congratulate the Minister and his officials for the work they have put into the Bill. Only good can come from it.

The Seanad adjourned at 11.5 p.m. until 10.30 a.m. on Wednesday, 18 July 1990.
