Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 19 Feb 1992

Vol. 131 No. 8

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator O'Donovan that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Marine to seek at EC level better fish quotas, maintain Ireland's present tonnage, seek extra funding and demand a minimum territorial limit of 50 miles around our coastline.

I also received notice from Senator Norris of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment to accede to the expressed wishes of Seanad Éireann and Dublin Corporation by making a substantial cash grant from lottery funding for the rebuilding of the Hirschfeld Centre in Dublin.

I also received notice from Senator Brendan Ryan of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Social Welfare to clarify, in the light of recent reports, the interpretation by his Department of the requirement that recipients of unemployment assistance and unemployment benefit be genuinely seeking work.

Tá fógra agam ón Seanadóir Pól Ó Foighil:

An gá atá anois ann le go ndearbhíodh an tAire Turasóireachta, Iompair agus Cumarsáide nach n-athrófar stádas Aerfort na Sionainne.

I also received notice from Senator Doyle of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to provide funds for the provision of permanent residential accommodation for the old and infirm of Wexford town and surrounding area.

I also received notice from Senator Neville of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Justice to recognise and deal with the urban deprivation and absence of opportunity in life which is contributing to the high levels of urban crime in sections of our cities and towns.

I also received notice from Senator Haughey of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Marine to outline the current situation regarding the report by his Department's inspectors and other reports into the collision between two ships near the entrance to Dublin port on 21 November last.

I also received notice from Senator Jackman of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education to abandon his plans to apply means testing to the ESF maintenance grants.

I regard the matters raised by Senators O'Donovan, Norris, Ryan, Ó Foighil, Doyle, Neville, Haughey and Jackman as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected Senator O'Donovan's matter and it will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senators Norris, Ryan, Ó Foighil, Doyle, Neville, Haughey and Jackman may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.
