Vol. 145 No. 2

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Fahey that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

To ask the Minister for Justice if she is aware that Garda strength in Galway city is down by 22 since January 1994 with at least a further five retirements by January next; and if she will outline the number of Garda appointments she now proposes for Galway city and the timescale for those appointments.

I also received notice from Senator Cosgrave of the following matter:

To ask the Minister for Justice if she is aware of the delay in her Department in granting a visa to a person (details supplied) who has been granted a work permit and is expected to commence employment shortly.

I also received notice from Senator McGennis of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment to make a statement regarding the delay in the transfer of the corporation housing stock and landbank to the three new Dublin local authorities.

I also received notice from Senator R. Kiely of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Social Welfare to establish the number of people claiming social welfare benefits fraudulently.

I also received notice from Senator Mulcahy of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to make a statement on the proposal by the Eastern Health Board to locate a drug rehabilitation unit in Weir Home, Cork Street, Dublin 8, and the anxiety that this proposal is causing residents of the home and local residents in the area and on the location of drug rehabilitation units generally.

I regard the matters raised as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected Senator Fahey's and Senator Cosgrave's matters and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. The other Senators may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.
