Seanad Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 15 Nov 1995

Vol. 145 No. 5

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Burke that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Environment to provide funding to upgrade the existing swimming pool and facilities at Castlebar, County Mayo.

I have also received notice from Senator Neville on the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Marine to establish a centre for international maritime business.

I have also received notice from Senator Fahey on the following matter:

To ask the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the Government policy on the growing trends where satellite television channels demand exclusive rights for sporting events, some of which are staged in Ireland, and if he is in agreement with the development of paid TV which could lead to individual payment being demanded for events such as the All Ireland finals or soccer internationals.

I have also received notice from Senator Mooney on the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education to indicate whether the Irish Government was consulted by the European Commission on the establishment of the Eurathlon Programme and if she agrees that the requirements of at least three member states participating should be reduced to two in order to permit the development of Irish sport, especially our national games.

I have selected Senators Burke's and Neville's matters and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. I regret I had to rule the matter raised by Senator Fahey out of order on the grounds of lack of ministerial responsibility. Senator Mooney may give notice on another day of the matter he wishes to raise.
