Thursday, 19 Dec 1996

Vol. 149 No. 16

Business of Seanad.

I have notice from Senator Daly that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, he proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to make a decision regarding the provision of a formal personal assistant service to enable people with disabilities to live independently; and if he will establish an independent living fund.

I have also received notice from Senator McGennis of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education to report on what proposals she has to cater for the educational needs of a child (details supplied) and her response to the report from the Castleknock child and family centre outlining his urgent need for speech therapy and their concern at the absence of adequate facilities for his education.

I have also received notice from Senator Hayes of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Foreign Affairs to give an update on the resolution passed at a recent meeting of the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs which called on the Government to call upon the European Union and the United Nations to obtain guarantees for the safe return of Belen Toras and Raul Ramos to Columbia.

I have also received notice from Senator Finneran of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to provide the necessary funding to the Irish Wheelchair Association for its proposed national respite and holiday centre at Donamon, County Roscommon.

I have also received notice from Senator McGowan of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for the Marine to make a statement on the religious discrimination claims against the Foyle Fisheries Commission.

I regard the matters raised by Senators Daly, McGennis, Hayes, Finneran and McGowan as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected Senator Daly's and Senator McGennis's matters and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. Senators Hayes, Finneran and McGowan may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.
