Special Committee Defence Bill, 1951 debate -
Thursday, 13 Mar 1952

SECTION 19.

I move amendment No. 20 :—

In paragraph (b), line 49, to delete the word " are."

I agree with the Deputy that in some cases the Bill speaks of a soldier as " enlisting " and in others as " enlisted." It is better to be consistent. We will put these cases right on the Report Stage.

Amendment, by leave, withdrawn.

I move amendment No. 21 :—

In paragraph (b), line 51, to insert after the word " Force " the words " in accordance with the provisions of this Act, and of the Regulations made thereunder."

The Deputy's view apparently is that if this proposed amendment of (b) were inserted paragraph (c) would be unnecessary. I am advised that it would be preferable administratively that the different classes making up the Force should be set out separately as in the Bill at present.

I felt that by a very simple addition to (b) everything set out in the long paragraph (c) could be included and that (c) was unnecessary. My amendments do not make any real difference except to shorten it. However, as the Minister is advised, we cannot do anything about it.

Amendment, by leave, withdrawn.
Amendment No. 22 not moved.
Section 19 agreed to.
