106 Deputy John O’Mahony asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of persons who have presented themselves to accident and emergency departments who have attempted suicide in each of the years 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007; the number that attended each hospital in tabular form; and if she will make a statement on the matter. A National Registry of Deliberate Self-Harm has been operating in general hospitals since 2001 and data is compiled and published on an annual basis by the National Suicide Research Foundation (NSRF). The Registry had near complete coverage of hospitals for the period 2002 — 2005. In 2006 and 2007, data was collected from all general and paediatric hospitals.

The numbers of individuals treated for deliberate self-harm in hospital emergency departments since 2004 are set out in the following table:
