203 Deputy Denis Naughten asked the Minister for Justice and Equality if he will clarify his position regarding the location of the Garda water unit; if he will confirm that it is to be retained at its Athlone base, County Westmeath; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6079/12]
View answerIn accordance with the provisions of the Garda Síochána Act 2005, it is for the Garda Commissioner to determine the manner in which members of An Garda Síochána, including specialist units such as the Garda Water Unit, are deployed and located throughout the State. I have no role in relation to these matters. I am advised by the Garda authorities that the allocation of specialist units is subject to continual review to ensure that the best possible Garda service is provided to the public. In particular, the situation is monitored in the light of crime trends, policing strategies and other operational requirements.
