The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission was established under the Garda Síochána Act 2005 to provide independent oversight of complaints made against members of the Garda Síochána. The Ombudsman Commission was in a preparatory phase in 2006 and became operational in May 2007. The 2007 allocation included significant funding relating to the initial set-up of the office particularly for the leasing and fit-out of its new premises.
