Responsibility for the provision of healthcare in prisons rests with my colleague the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice. Under the Health Act 2007, HIQA’s statutory remit does not extend to the regulation of health services provided in the prison system. The Department of Health and the Department of Justice & Equality are in ongoing communication on issues related to healthcare service delivery in prisons.
