The Dáil will meet for a special sitting on Saturday, when it is expected to elect a new Taoiseach in accordance with a provision in the programme for Government, Our Shared Future.

The sitting will commence at 10.30 a.m. The Taoiseach is expected to have resigned before the sitting and to inform the House of this at the beginning of the session. This will be followed by the seeking of nominations for Taoiseach and a debate thereon.

Following the debate and any votes, the sitting will be suspended to allow the new Taoiseach to travel to Áras an Uachtaráin to be appointed officially to the role by the President.

When the new Taoiseach returns to Leinster House at approximately 5 p.m., the Dáil will be informed of the appointment by the President and there will be a debate on a motion to approve the nomination by the Taoiseach of Oireachtas Members for appointment by the President to be members of the Government, also referred to as appointing Ministers to the Cabinet.

You can follow proceedings on Oireachtas TV or the website.
