As part of a planned change, Senator Jerry Buttimer has succeeded Senator Mark Daly as Cathaoirleach of the Seanad.

After the position was vacated, Senator Buttimer was nominated for the position along with Senator Victor Boyhan, while the Father of the House, Senator David Norris, took the Chair. Senator Buttimer was proposed by Senator Regina Doherty and the proposal was seconded by Senator Diarmuid Wilson.

Accepting the position, Senator Buttimer called his appointment "an extraordinary privilege" and "an honour [he] never thought would happen". The sitting was attended by friends and family of Senator Buttimer, along with party colleagues.

Separately, Senator Mark Daly was elected to the position of Leas-Chathaoirleach, while Senator Lisa Chambers takes the role of Leader of the Seanad from Senator Regina Doherty.
