Europe Day is marked on 9 May, the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration in 1950, across the countries that comprise the EU.

It is seen as day of reflection on the co-operation, prosperity and peace that has come about through the European project, and the Houses have used the opportunity to try to get citizens better acquainted with the EU's efforts to build a Europe that is green, digital and competitive, fair and skilled, as well as strong, resilient and safe.

Commissioner Mairead McGuiness addressed Seanad Éireann on the occasion of Europe Day, speaking to the history of the EU, her role as Commissioner for financial services, financial stability and capital markets union and the future impact of issues such as climate, currencies and artificial intelligence.

Separately, the Houses host Into Europe: Ireland and the EU, a Royal Irish Academy exhibition commissioned by EU50, DFA, as part of the ongoing Documents in Foreign Policy series, led by Dr. Michael Kennedy.

Speaking at the launch of the exhibition, the Ceann Comhairle said: "This exhibition reminds us of the radical economic and social transformation of our country over the last 50 years. In terms of peace, prosperity and equality, the EU has made Ireland a better place."
