Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence to hear from Russia’s Ambassador to Ireland

1 Feb 2022, 19:33

The Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence will hear from Russia’s Ambassador to Ireland, His Excellency Mr. Yuri Antonoyovich Filatov when it meets on Wednesday, 2 February.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Charlie Flanagan said:

"Members of the Committee look forward to meeting with Ambassador Filatov to discuss Russia’s foreign policy and security in Europe. There has been a significant increase in tensions between Russia and the West, in recent times, particularly in respect of the build-up of troops on the Russian border with Ukraine and this opportunity to exchange views in respect of the increased military activity and the response from the West is most welcome. Members will further engage on the many issues, around the globe, that require constant attention and greater cooperation."

"The Committee also welcomes the opportunity to discuss the decision by the Russian authorities to move the proposed military exercises, scheduled to take place in Ireland’s Exclusive Economic Zone, to another location."

The meeting is scheduled to take place at 5.30pm in Committee Room 4, Leinster House.
