Denis Naughten TD Elected Chair of Oireachtas Health and Children Committee

Ciara Conway TD elected Vice-Chair

Denis Naughten TD for Roscommon-South Leitrim was today elected as Chairman to the key Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children

Waterford TD, Ciara Conway was elected as Committee Vice-Chair.

The Committee will shadow the activities of the Department of Health and Department of Children and Youth Affairs.

Speaking after his election, Deputy Naughten said;
“Firstly, I would like to thank my Committee colleagues for electing me to this important position. The effective and timely provision of healthcare is something which is a high priority for everyone. I feel that this Committee can have a central role in shaping health policy and scrutinising any proposed changes to the way healthcare is delivered in this country.

I am keen that this Committee take a collaborative approach to its work. I believe that by working together we can help ensure that we can have a meaningful input into this fundamental sector.”

Committee Vice-Chair, Ciara Conway TD said;
“I am looking forward to the role this Committee will have and hope to play a constructive role in its workings. All Oireachtas members regardless of political affiliation, have a strong interest in ensuring that service users receive the optimum care possible and I believe this Committee can have a productive role in helping to facilitate this.”

The Committee will hold a meeting shortly to identify its work programme and priorities.

Denis Naughten TD
Denis Naughten was first elected to the Dáil in 1997.
He has a number of opposition spokesperson roles including youth affairs, school transport and adult education.

Ciara Conway TD
Ciara Conway was elected to the 31st Dáil in 2011, on her first attempt.
Her election made history in the constituency as she was the first female T.D. in Waterford.
She was first elected to Dungarvan Town Council following the 2009 Local Elections.
