Public Accounts Committee to examine revenue collection issues with officials from the Revenue Commissioners

21 Sep 2011, 12:05

The Public Accounts Committee will question officials from the Revenue Commissioners at its meeting tomorrow, Thursday 22nd September. Among the key issues the Committee will examine is the issue of revenue collection and unpaid taxes.

Chairman of the Committee, John McGuinness, TD said: “According to the latest Comptroller and Auditor General’s report, a total of €2.1 billion was owed in unpaid taxes at the end of March this year, a sum that has almost doubled in four years. The issue of uncollected taxes has been growing down through the years and tomorrow we will have officials from the Revenue Commissioners before the Committee to go through the various figures in relation to unpaid taxes. It will give us an opportunity to tease out the reasons why the money is not collected and discuss what actions the Revenue Commissioners are taking on behalf of the State to recover that money and improve their collections in the future.”

As well as discussing the issue of revenue collection, the Committee will also question Revenue officials on the collection performance by sector and tax head; revenue compliance interventions; counteracting smuggling of tobacco products; revenue repayments; loss reliefs; and performance outcomes in Revenue.

The Committee will meet tomorrow, 22nd September at 10am in Committee Room 1, Leinster House 2000.
