Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture are briefed on Ireland's authorisation of Offshore Exploration Licenses

27 Sep 2011, 19:43

Members of the Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture received a detailed overview of the historical and current situation of the petroleum industry in Ireland from officials of the Department of Communications and Natural Resources at its meeting today.

Speaking after the meeting, Committee Chairman, Andrew Doyle, TD said:  “This issue is not only complex and complicated but is also one that has proven to be emotive and sometimes divisive.  Our meeting today gave the Committee an opportunity to explore the potential of the industry while also hearing about the fiscal regimes that operate in this sector.  The Committee prioritised this important matter as part of its work programme and this issue will remain a hot topic for the Committee.

We intend to revisit this issue again in the coming months when the Committee will have an opportunity to meet with other stakeholders and interested parties from both sides of the debate.  We are at the beginning rather than the end of the process.”
