Dr Maurice Manning becomes first non-Oireachtas Member to address Seanad Éireann under new rules

27 Sep 2011, 14:22

Dr Maurice Manning, President of the Irish Human Rights Commission and Chair of the European Group of the National Human Rights Institution, will address Seanad Éireann on Wednesday, 28th September at 11.45 a.m.

It will be the first time that a person who is not a member of the Oireachtas has spoken to the Seanad following a landmark decision last July when members passed a motion allowing people in public and civil life to address sittings of Seanad Éireann. Under the new arrangements, people will be invited to make an address to the chamber and will have an opportunity to exchange ideas and views with Senators.

Cathaoirleach, Senator Paddy Burke said: “This is an extremely progressive measure. The Senate will benefit from the contributions of persons who have first hand experience of the different facets of civil life. It also provides an opportunity for people from different walks of life to directly address the chamber on their areas of expertise.

Dr Maurice Manning has a distinguished track record as a politician, academic and human rights campaigner. We are delighted that a person of such a high standing and reputation will become the first to address Seanad Éireann under the new rules and we are looking forward to his contribution.”
