Health Committee to hear Government’s Priorities For Disability, Mental Health and Older People

28 Sep 2011, 17:08

Minister for Disability, Equality, Mental Health and Older People, Kathleen Lynch, TD, will brief the Oireachtas Health and Children Committee for the first time at its meeting tomorrow Thursday, 29th at 11.30 am, in Committee Room 2, Leinster House.

The meeting will provide an opportunity for the Minister to outline her priorities and the Government’s commitments in the important areas of disability, mental health and older people.

Commenting in advance of the tomorrow’s meeting, Committee Chairman, Jerry Buttimer, TD said: “The Committee is looking forward to discussing the Minister’s priorities and plans for the future across the range of sectors that she has responsibility for.  The availability and quality of services to some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged in society must be protected and maintained.

Following the recent TV documentary, “Behind the Walls” the Minister committed to a review of the Mental Health Act 2001.  We look forward to hearing how her plans for this review are progressing.

Our meeting will also provide us with an opportunity to discuss the care and protection of people with disabilities and how we can maintain and enhance the services for this group to ensure that they can be supported and encouraged to play an active role in our country and our futures.”

This meeting will take place in Committee Room 2, Leinster House at 11.30 am on Thursday, 29th September.
