EU Affairs Committee to discuss Danish Presidency priorities

11 Jan 2012, 14:43

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs meets with the Danish Ambassador to Ireland tomorrow morning, Thursday 12 January. Denmark assumed the rotating six month EU Presidency on 1 January and H.E. Niels Pultz will outline its priorities to Committee Members.

Committee Vice-Chairman Paschal Donohue TD says: \"The Committee welcomes Ambassador Pultz to discuss the priorities of the Danish Presidency in what is a defining period for the European Union.

\"The Danes are acutely aware that the EU is facing the greatest challenge in its history and it is timely for the Committee to look at the agenda of their six month presidency. Responding to the European sovereign debt crisis, and assisting with the December agreement on a fiscal compact, will undoubtedly be high on the agenda

\"The EU’s smaller nations hold a strong reputation for delivering effective EU presidencies and solid leadership is an imperative at this critical juncture. As well as restoring economic stability, we note that the Danes are seeking to continue the development of the single market, foster environmental protection and better manage migration from countries outside the European Union.

\"The Committee look forward to discussing the implementation of these priorities in greater detail with the Ambassador on Thursday.\"

The meeting takes place tomorrow Thursday 12 January at 11:30 a.m. in Committee Room 3, Leinster House 2000.
