Report launch: new Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions

23 Jan 2012, 11:17

You are invited to attend, or send a representative, to the launch of a report on the proposed new Joint Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions. It takes place on Wednesday, 25 January at 11.30 a.m. in the AV Room of Leinster House.

The report, prepared by the current Committee on Investigations, Oversight and Petitions on its future role, proposes that the Committee will have similar powers to the Public Accounts Committee in carrying out oversight of public service delivery generally, with a particular focus on investigating and identifying improvements in the delivery of such services to citizens.

As part of its role, the Committee will regularly engage with the Ombudsman, and will also receive and process public petitions submitted to the Houses of the Oireachtas.

Event: Launch of Report on Revised Orders of Reference for the Joint Committee on Investigations, Oversight and Petitions
Location: AV Room, Leinster House
Date: Wednesday, 25 January, 2012
Time: 11.30 a.m

Cathaoirleach Peadar Tóibín TD along with other Committee Members will be in attendance and available for questions.

Deputy Tóibín says: “The report outlines the work undertaken by the Committee since its appointment in July 2011 and presents proposals for its future role in enhancing the accountability of Public Services to the Houses of the Oireachtas.

“In developing its orders of reference, the Committee has brought forward proposals that will examine public services through the experience of our citizens. The proposals will allow for the committee to undertake investigations on it’s own behalf, and in response to petitions from citizens.

We believe that this approach will put citizens at the heart of our parliamentary system.”
