Minister for Education and Skills to address Education Committee

Minister for Education and Skills Ruairi Quinn TD will come before the Joint Committee on Jobs, Social Protection and Education tomorrow, 25th January, to discuss a range of education matters.

Among the issues to be addressed are:

• The Committee report on the Heads of the Education & Training Boards Bill, 2011
• Proposals for a National Adult Literacy Strategy
• Current and future plans for small primary schools
• The future role of career guidance in secondary schools
• The proposed abolition of the Modern Languages in Primary Schools Initiative
• DEIS schools
• Motion on the following Order in draft: Teaching Council Act 2001 (Amendment of Nominating Bodies) Order 2012
• Junior and Leaving Cert reform
• The Department’s policy regarding pre-school and associated funding
• How Ireland compares with other OECD members with regard to funding for pre-school, primary, secondary and third level sectors
• Current initiatives of Young Ballymun, Northside Partnership and the Early Learning Initiative, National College of Ireland

Chairman of the Committee Deputy Damien English said: “It is timely and welcome that the Minister has agreed to address the Committee tomorrow to discuss the Committee’s report on the Heads of the Education and Training Boards Bill and a range of education matters. The Committee will have an opportunity to consider the Government’s approach to education in a number of key areas. Members will also have an opportunity to question the Minister and raise any issues they may have on the matters for discussion.”

This meeting will take place on Wednesday, 25th January in Committee Room 3, Leinster House 2000 at 9.30am.
