Communications Committee to meet Regulator

30 Jan 2012, 18:16

The Joint Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture will meet with representatives from the Commission for Communications Regulation (Comreg) tomorrow Tuesday 31 January at 2p.m.

30 January 2012

ComReg is the statutory body responsible for the regulation of the electronic communications sector, which include telecommunications and broadcasting, and the postal sector.

Chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee Andrew Doyle TD said: “A dynamic communications sector is fundamental to any modern economy. In an ever more connected world, digital communication advances have significant implications for society too. Since its foundation in 2002, Comreg's role is to protect and inform consumers, promote competition and foster innovation. It is funded through an industry levy on the communications sector.

“Committee Members look forward to a detailed briefing from both of Comreg’s Commissioners, Chairperson Alex Chisholm and Kevin O’Brien, on their current work priorities.

“Comreg has made the evolution to high-speed broadband a central priority to its work in recent years and this will no doubt feature in tomorrow’s discussions. While rates of broadband penetration have improved in recent years, Ireland remains mid-table in EU broadband rankings.”

The meeting takes place at 2p.m. in Committee Room 3, LH 2000. Committee proceedings can be followed live at: http://bit.ly/24YmPI
