Finance Committee to examine the problem of cigarette smuggling

30 Jan 2012, 17:06

The problem of cigarette smuggling will be discussed at the next meeting of the Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform when it meets with representatives from Retailers Against Smuggling.

Retailers Against Smuggling was established in 2009 to fight the illegal cigarette trade and now has almost 3,000 retail members in Ireland. Representatives Benny Gilsenan and William Hanley will brief members of the Committee on the issue tomorrow, Tuesday 31st January.

Committee Chairman, Alex White TD said: “According to Retailers Against Smuggling, the illegal cigarette trade is costing hundreds of jobs, and results in hundreds of millions of euro in lost revenue from excise duties. Tomorrow the organisation will have an opportunity to outline in detail the problem of cigarette smuggling from their point of view, and to brief the Committee on possible solutions.”

This meeting will take place tomorrow, Tuesday 31st January in Committee Room 2, Leinster House 2000 at 2.30pm.
