Sub-Committee on Penal Reform to hear submissions from five groups

31 Jan 2012, 17:37

Five organisations will present submissions on penal reform to the sub-Committee on Penal Reform at its meeting tomorrow, 1st February.

Chairman of the Committee, Deputy David Stanton said: “This sub-Committee's role is to examine the possible use of non-custodial alternatives to imprisonment – in particular strategies which might involve some form of early release.

It is important to hear at first-hand from those involved in the Penal system and also from those parties with proposals on penal reform. Therefore, we are looking forward to hearing from representatives from the Probation Service; the Irish Prison Service; Care after Prison; The Irish Association for the Social Integration of Offenders; and the Inspector of Prisons.

The sub-Committee has received some detailed submissions on this matter and in this, its second public hearing wishes to further explore the points raised.”

This meeting will be split into two sessions beginning with the Probation Service and the Irish Prison Service on Wednesday, 1st February, in Committee Room 2, Leinster House 2000 at 9.30am. The second session with Care after Prison; The Irish Association for the Social Integration of Offenders; and the Inspector of Prisons will take place at 2.30pm.
