Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht to discuss Seachtain Na Gaeilge and role of An Coimisinéir Teanga

7 Feb 2012, 11:55

A number of Irish language groups will address the Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht on the proposed funding structures for Irish language organisations, Seachtain Na Gaeilge and the role and functions of An Coimisinéir Teanga at its meeting tomorrow, Wednesday 8th February.

Committee Cathaoirleach Ciarán Lynch, TD said: “We’re looking forward to our meeting tomorrow with Conradh na Gaeilge, Guth na Gaeltachta and Aontas Phobal na Gaeilge when we will discuss the proposed funding structures for Irish language groups. We will also have an opportunity to get their views on Seachtain Na Gaeilge, a non-profit organisation which helps to promote the Irish language and culture, at home and abroad, during a two-week festival held at the beginning of March every year. The festival motto is “Croí na Gaeilge – It’s You (Heart of the Language – It’s You!) and it aims to include everyone, no matter where they are, in the renewal of the Irish language. Over 150,000 people of all ages and all levels of fluency in Irish take part in the festival which ranges from street Céilís to television programmes.

We will also have a chance to discuss the role and functions of An Coimisinéir Teanga with these groups. An Coimisinéir Teanga monitors compliance by public bodies with the provisions of the Official Languages Act and to take all necessary measures to ensure compliance by public bodies with their duties under the Act.”

This meeting will take place on Wednesday, 8th February, in Committee Room 4, Leinster House 2000 at 2.15pm.
