Hannigan welcomes launch of Blue Star Programme for primary schools

8 Feb 2012, 12:12

The Chairman of the Joint Committee on European Union Affairs, Dominic Hannigan TD, has welcomed the launch by the Taoiseach and the Minister for European Union Affairs of the Blue Star Programme for primary schools.

Commenting on the launch, Deputy Hannigan said: “The Blue Star Programme has been launched by European Movement Ireland in conjunction with the Department of the Taoiseach’s Communicating Europe Initiative.  This is a pilot programme for primary schools around the country, which will seek to foster a better understanding of European affairs and how it affects our lives through classroom projects and initiatives.”

“This is an important step, which will enhance young peoples’ understanding of Ireland’s place in Europe.  This is particularly relevant - as Ireland’s membership of the European Union plays such a big role in the day to day life of our country.”

“Young people see European Union flags everywhere, and may question what exactly it means to them and the country.  Engaging children at a young age through this initiative should greatly help young people understand how important the European Union is to Ireland.”

“This programme will facilitate a fun and interesting approach to answering their questions.  Once the school has been assessed and met the criteria, the school will be awarded their Blue Star and European flag.”

“With the programme culminating with Europe Week in May, this initiative will hopefully engage young people in a fun way in their understanding of Ireland’s relationship with the European Union.”
