EU Affairs Committee invites submissions on Fiscal Treaty

14 Feb 2012, 16:30

The text of the new EU Fiscal Treaty (“Treaty on stability, coordination and governance in the economic and monetary union”) was agreed by 25 Member States, including Ireland, on 30 January. The Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs will lead a national debate on the new Treaty.

In considering the Treaty, the Committee now invites submissions from individual members of the public and organisations, who wish to make known their views on the Treaty and its implications for Ireland.

Committee Chairman Dominic Hannigan TD says:  “The decision on ratification, or otherwise, of the new Fiscal Treaty will have substantial implications for Ireland. To the forefront of Committee Members’ considerations is the impact of the terms of the Treaty on the daily lives of citizens on the ground.

“Our cross-party Committee invites submissions from individual citizens as well as interested organisations, which will play a constructive role in a national debate on the new Treaty.

We look forward to receiving and considering the views from a wide range of opinion, which will inform our discussions on the EU Fiscal Treaty.”

Submissions should ideally be emailed electronically to eu.committee@oireachtas.ie, with 'Treaty Submission' in the subject bar.

The closing date for submissions is Friday 16 March 2012.
