Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht to discuss the use of arts to promote social inclusion

5 Mar 2012, 15:25

The Committee on Environment, Transport, Culture and the Gaeltacht will discuss utilising the Arts to combat disadvantage and to encourage their greater integration and social inclusion within local communities.

Representatives from Luisne Art Project; Mayo County Council; and Offaly County Council will attend the committee meeting to address the issue of using arts to promote social inclusion.

Committee Cathaoirleach Ciarán Lynch, TD said: “Arts, music, culture and storytelling have always been an important part of Irish life and, in many cases, can be the social glue that holds society together, providing a sense of identity and being part of the community.

Arts groups across the country are involved in innovative and inclusive programmes at a local level for all age groups and backgrounds. Tomorrow a number of these groups will have a chance to present and explain the various artistic activities that they engage in to promote social inclusion.

We are looking forward to our meeting tomorrow with representatives from Luisne Art Project; Mayo County Council; and Offaly County Council to discuss how the arts can be utilised to encourage greater integration and combat disadvantage within local communities.”

This meeting will take place on Tuesday, 6th March, in Committee Room 4, Leinster House 2000 at 2.15pm.
